Teresa Lewis, Director

Teresa Lewis is a Senior Accredited Psychotherapist with a Master’s degree in Psychotherapy and more than three decades of continuous clinical practice. Since qualifying in 1995, she has delivered over 30,000 hours of psychotherapy, working at depth with trauma, anxiety, relational distress, and complex psychological presentations.

Her clinical work has centred on one organising principle: integration. Rather than focusing on symptom reduction alone, Teresa’s practice has been devoted to structural change — supporting coherence between mind, brain, body, and relationship. Integrating nervous system science, trauma-informed methodology, and relational psychotherapy, she has consistently worked at the level where lasting change becomes biologically possible.

Alongside her clinical work, Teresa has made a substantial contribution to the education and training of psychotherapists internationally. Her teaching materials and clinical frameworks are embedded within university and postgraduate training curricula across the UK, United States, Australia, and New Zealand — shaping how the next generation of psychotherapists understand nervous system regulation, integration, and clinical decision-making.

Her educational work is used within institutions including The Open University, Boston University, the University of California, the University of Iowa, Massey University (New Zealand), the University at Buffalo, and Aurora University. Her training has also informed professional development and leadership programmes within the United States Department of Defense, the Australian Department of Justice and Safety, and the UK Civil Service.

Teresa is the Founder and Director of Lewis Psychology, Wolverhampton’s only counselling and psychotherapy organisation to achieve Service Accreditation from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Under her leadership, the organisation has become nationally recognised for its ethical standards, relational integrity, and psychologically informed service delivery, receiving multiple business awards and professional recognition.

A qualified EMDR practitioner, accredited mindfulness teacher, and registered member of the Association for Coaching (MAC), Teresa was also a founding member of the BACP Coaching Division, contributing to the dialogue between psychotherapy and coaching as interrelated professional disciplines.

Today, Teresa’s work continues through advanced clinical education, supervision, and the development of precise, biologically informed frameworks for therapeutic practice. Her contribution lies not only in the clients she has worked with, but in the clinicians she has trained — and in the standards of integration, timing, and ethical precision she has helped establish within contemporary psychotherapy.

Selected teaching resources are available via her YouTube channel, where she shares trauma-aware, psychologically rigorous education for professionals and the wider public.

She has also completed specialised training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) through the Association of Psychological Therapies (APT). Over the years, Joanne has honed her knowledge and skills by delivering front-line services in an acute private hospital setting, addressing a variety of complex psychological health conditions. Additionally, she is skilled in facilitating therapeutic groups.

At Lewis Psychology, Joanne works with both private and corporate clients, tackling a wide range of issues such as bereavement, depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, anger, and stress. She has a particular interest in trauma and its effects on the nervous system, understanding how traumatic experiences can lead to dysregulation. This dysregulation can manifest in various ways, including heightened anxiety, emotional numbness, and difficulty in regulating emotions. Joanne employs therapeutic techniques to help clients recognise the signs of dysregulation and teaches them strategies to restore balance, fostering a sense of safety and stability in their lives.

Joanne is especially drawn to third-wave approaches to therapy, including Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). These methodologies emphasise mindfulness, self-compassion, and emotional regulation, equipping clients with practical tools to manage their emotions and foster healthier relationships with themselves and others. Joanne believes that integrating these approaches allows her to offer a more holistic and effective therapeutic experience.

Dedicated to creating a safe, trusting, and collaborative environment, Joanne empowers clients to explore sensitive material and enhance their quality of life. Embodying the humanistic values of counselling, she focuses on personal meaning and relational understanding. Her therapeutic approach is integrative, combining humanistic principles with concepts from DBT, CFT, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Joanne’s therapeutic process is informed by an evolving formulation, developed through a shared exploration and understanding of each client’s unique presenting difficulties. By incorporating these third-wave approaches, she helps clients cultivate self-compassion, resilience, and the skills necessary to navigate their emotional landscapes more effectively.

She is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and has worked across a range of NHS and third-sector settings, including NHS Talking Therapies, an NHS sexual health service, and organisations supporting women’s mental health.

She pays careful attention to what unfolds in the therapeutic relationship, seeing it as a vital space for trust, healing, and emotional growth.

Claire also recognises the creative ways people adapt in response to pain or stress. With compassion and curiosity, she helps clients understand these patterns and begin to create new ways of relating — to themselves, others, and the world — that feel more empowered, connected, and aligned with who they truly are.

Each person’s therapeutic journey is different. Claire works collaboratively and flexibly, meeting each client where they are. Whatever brings you to therapy, she offers a grounded, emotionally attuned presence — someone to walk alongside you as you move toward greater self-understanding, confidence, and change.
