Rape and Sexual Assault

Rape and sexual assault can have profound emotional, physical and psychological effects.

Sexual violence is not defined by force alone. It occurs when sexual activity takes place without freely given consent.

People respond in many different ways. Some people feel frightened, distressed or overwhelmed. Others feel numb, disconnected, calm, angry or unsure how they feel. Reactions may change over time.

Sexual violence can affect people of all genders, ages, sexual orientations and backgrounds.

Understanding Consent

Consent means agreeing by choice and having the freedom and capacity to make that choice.

Consent cannot be assumed because someone did not say no, did not physically resist, was in a relationship, had consented previously, or had used alcohol or drugs.

Many people respond to threat by freezing, shutting down or complying automatically. These are recognised protective responses and are not signs of consent.

If This Has Happened To You

If the experience was recent, you may wish to consider seeking medical support, speaking with someone you trust or contacting a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).

You do not have to decide immediately whether to report to police.

The Impact of Sexual Violence

Experiences of sexual violence can affect emotional wellbeing, relationships, confidence, identity and sense of safety.

Some people experience intrusive memories, anxiety, disturbed sleep, shame, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others or changes in relationships.

Others may not experience these reactions at all.

There is no right or wrong response.

How Can Therapy Help?

Therapy is not about forcing disclosure or talking about experiences before you are ready.

The pace and focus of therapy should feel safe and collaborative.

Therapy may support people to understand the impact of what has happened, reduce self blame, process difficult experiences, rebuild trust, strengthen boundaries and reconnect with themselves and their lives.

There is no single approach that works for everyone and support should be tailored to the person rather than the event.
