What is Couple Counselling?

Couple counselling provides an opportunity to explore patterns, dynamics and conflicts within a relationship and to address issues which are causing stress within it.

Our couple counsellors work with couples in any kind of relationship: hetero-sexual; gay or lesbian; transgender; married or co-habiting; pre-living together; separating or divorcing; love marriages and arranged marriages.

Sometimes people find that their partner will not attend couple counselling and in such cases you may come on your own for individual counselling. Many people do attend alone and still see positive benefits to their relationship.

Violence and abuse is an issue for some people who come to us for help with their relationship. We know that in this situation working with both partners together may not be safe. If this is the case then we would suggest each partner attend individual counselling and/or specialist support from another agency.

Counselling For Sexual Issues

It is not uncommon for people to experience sexual difficulties at some time in their lives. There are a lot of physical and emotional reasons why sexual issues can happen, for example, stress, a new baby or illness. Sometimes things get better without professional help, but for some people issues can get worse.

Problems such as erectile difficulty, lack of sexual desire and painful sex can have devastating effects on a couple’s relationship. Identifying those problems and taking steps to address them can have positive results.

Counsellors understand that sexual problems can be difficult to talk about and will endeavour to put you at your ease, helping you to talk about your sexual concerns.

Separation or Divorce Counselling

Separation or divorce counselling can help explore whether trust can be repaired and the relationship rebuilt. If not, it can allow the couple to split with more understanding and less hostility.

Relationship Counselling

Relationship counselling is the process of counselling the parties of a relationship such as mother and daughter, employee or employer, or between a professional and a client.  Relationship counselling can help the individuals recognise and manage troublesome differences and repeating patterns of distress.
